The Ivan Aufulich Papers

9. Kolya N. Amornink

An anonymous apparatchik at a nameless ministry, who should have known better, let slip that Kolya N. Amornink ("Kolya" is a diminutive for "Nikolai") has "retired to help out on a collective." Knowledgable Kremlin-watchers know, of course, that this is a euphemism: if Comrade Amornink is indeed aiding the productivity of a collective, it is as fertilizer.

Such a development will mean that Muscovites will see a decline in street-sweeping services, and grapes and soda crackers will become increasingly unavailable throughout the area around Krasnoyarsk.
